GFOAz is pleased to present its ever-popular annual budget forum on Friday, November 8. Over the last few years, local governments have done a remarkable job of trying to balance their budgets and preserve services with a lower amount of revenue through a variety of "tools in the toolbox" - some traditional, some not. As there are some stabilizing local government economic indicators, recoveries in their traditional sense may be more muted. In Reader's Digest, Don Snyder tells us that he noticed his employees extending their allotted break time. So he put this sign on their bulletin board.

"Starting immediately, your 15 minute breaks are being cut back from a half-hour to 20 minutes." He says that using humor, employees got the message.

All our lives we've been told that you have to be so serious to be successful. It's nothing but a myth! According to the business journal, Human Resources Focus, 96% of executives surveyed said people with a sense of humor do better at their jobs than those who have little or no sense of humor. Review of the Advanced Government Finance Institute Madison, Wisconsin - July 2013

Thank you very much for the scholarship and the opportunity to attend the AGFI. It was a wonderful learning and networking experience. I wish I had attended many years ago, because the lessons learned will definitely make me a better leader and communicator throughout the remainder of my career.

The first session on Monday, "What It Means to be a Leader," was facilitated by Deborah Laurel. It was highly interactive and increased our knowledge on the competencies of leadership , the various leadership styles and when to use each type. Type of leadership depends on decision being made. If expertise is required, then a leader can solve the issue alone. If acceptance is required, need real participation by all affected parties. Read more
